Description
1902 PORTUGUESE GOA RECEIVING AUTHORITY ARCHIVE SPECIMENS: 1902 KEVII ½d - £20 (½d, 1d, 1½d, 2d, 2½d, 3d, 4d, 5d, 6d, 1/-, 2/-, 2/6, 4/-, 5/-, 10/-, £1, £1.10, £5, £10 & £20). Intact portion of ledger sheet from the Goa archive annotated "Natal", bearing the stamps strongly handstamped "ULTRAMAR" in violet-blue (in addition to the usual SPECIMEN overprint). Some minor imperfections as usual for these. A spectacular group sent from the UPU in Berne to the Portuguese Post Office for distribution to their overseas colonies. Superb, rare, a magnificent, colourful exhibition array for connoisseur.
These specimens emanate from a Portuguese Colonial receiving authority in India (probably Portuguese Goa). The additional handstamped defacement was applied in Lisbon prior to distribution of the specimens (received through the UPU) to the overseas Portuguese colonies.
