Description

INTERPROVINCIAL PERIOD: 1910 Envelope franked single CAPE KEVII 1d USED IN CAPE, the adhesive tied by MANUSCRIPT CANCELLATION "Britsville Siding, 23/11/10". Addressed to Cape Town with arrival cds NO 24 on reverse. An exceedingly rare example of a manuscript cancellation in this period on a genuine commercial mail example, the manuscript cancellation occasioned by the absence of proper canceller in this tiny PO. Minor imperfections, otherwise F-VF, desirable piece.
The Post Office at Britsville Rail was at best a Railway Telegraph Office at this small station which fell under De Aar. It was closed on 1.10.1910, reopening only in 1921. Putzel categorises the regular postmarks themselves as "RRRR".
