1888 SOLDIER'S LETTER "From No263 Pte T Clayton, C Company, 1st N S Regt, Entonjeni" sent at the PENNY CONCESSIONARY RATE to England. The envelope is countersigned at lower left with Officer's countersignature (a Captain "Commanding Detachment, 1st N Stafford Regt, Entonjeneni, Zululand") as required for this military rate. Franked Zululand QV 1d overprinted tied Entonjaneni SE 11 cds. On reverse Eshowe, Lower Tugela and Durban cds's transits; Maidenhead arrival. Couple minor imperfections as usually found; superior for these. A rare military letter directly attributable by the sender's endorsement to duties within the Territory. Ex Wong, Sattin & Trotter. This detachment of the North Staffordshire Regiment was tasked to capture Chief Dinizulu who had reverted to raiding neighbouring tribes cattle and so unsettling the region.
